La Liga Round Up 27/1/13

Written by Lewis Winter

Real Madrid 4-0 Getafe
Real Madrid today comfortably beat 11th placed Getafe 4-0. Madrid were frustrated in the first half, creating numerous chances, but failing to take any of them. However, Sergio Ramos opened the scoring just after half time, and that seemed to open the floodgates. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a 9 minute perfect hat trick to secure the win for Real, as they moved to within 12 points of leaders Barcelona, for a few hours at least.

Rayo Vallecano 3-0 Real Betis
Rayo Vallecano surprisingly eased to victory over 4th placed Real Betis. The home side were awarded a penalty inside 3 minutes, with Piti making no mistake from 12 yards. Andrija Delibasic and Jose Carlos completed the scoring, sending their team up to 5th in La Liga, just one point behind today's opponents.

Barcelona 5-1 Osasuna
The La Liga leaders Barcelona strolled to victory over 10 man Osasuna this evening, with Lionel Messi scoring 4. Messi opened the scoring with his 200th La Liga goal, netting for a La Liga record 11 consecutive game, rounding Andres Fernandes after getting onto the end of Xavi's pass. Osasuna surpsingly found an equaliser when Loe fired home a half-volley from 20 yards, but Barca were then awarded a penalty when Alejandro Arribas handled, resulting in a second yellow card for the defender, with Messi tucking away the spot kick. Pedro made it 3 before half time, after being slipped in by Dani Alves, as Barca started to cruise.

It was quickly 5-1 after the break, when Messi scored his 3rd and 4th inside a minute, but that was the end of the scoring despite creating a number of golden opportunities. Barca restore their 15 point lead over Real, with Osasuna remaining 18th with 18 points.

Athletic Bilbao 3-0 Atletico Madrid
Bilbao completed a shock 3-0 victory at home to 3rd placed Atletico minus star striker Falcao. After a goalless first half the home side took the lead 5 minutes into the second period when Mikel San Jose jumped unchallenged to head home. With just over 10 minutes to go it was 2. Markel Susaeta controlled a through ball well before smashing past Thibaut Courtois. The third came with 5 minute left on the clock when a sweeping counter attacking move was finished off superbly by Marcos.

Mallorca 2-3 Malaga
Mallorca played host to the game of the weekend but were able to get anything out of it with Malaga taking all 3 points. The away side started in a frantic pace and were two goals to the good after just quarter of an hour. Javier Saviola volleyed home the first from a poor defensive header and Isco made it two nil when he was quickest on hand to turn in a deep cross to the back post. Victor got the home side back in the game just before the half hour mark, sliding the ball under goalkeeper Willy after a smart knock down, but Malaga restored their 2 goal cushion on the hour mark when Monreal fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area. Giovani Dos Santos made it a nervy last 20 minutes for Malaga when he bent a free kick into the top corner but Malaga held on for the 3 points.

Brentford 2-2 Chelsea
A late Fernando Torres goal saved Chelsea's blushes, as League One side Brentford held them to a 2-2 draw. The home side dominated the first half and deservedly took the lead when Marcelo Trotta fired home after Ross Turnbull failed to hold onto a shot. Chelsea equalised 10 minutes after the break, through a superb effort from Oscar, but The Bees re-took the lead when Harry Forrester converted a penalty after Turnbull pulled down Tom Adeyemi. The home side were minutes away from a huge upset, but Torres curled an unstoppable shot past Moore to send the tie to a replay. The winner of the replay will travel to Championship side Middlesbrough.

Leeds United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Championship outfit Leeds knocked out Champions League hopefuls Tottenham at Elland Road this afternoon. Luke Varney curled round Brad Friedel to give the home side an early lead, before Ross McCormack unleashed a superb curling effort just after the break to double their lead. Clint Dempsey almost immediately struck back for Spurs to give the home fans a nervy last 30 minutes, but they survived and now face a trip to the Etihad Stadium to play Manchester City.

Oldham Athletic 3-2 Liverpool
League one side Oldham Athletic overcome Premier League side Liverpool 3-2 at Boundary Park this evening, to give one of the shocks of the round. Striker Matt Smith headed home the opener early on, but the lead was short lived when stand-in captain Luis Suarez equalised superbly. However, the home side didn't let that goal affect them, and Smith scored in first half stoppage time to take his side into the break 2-1 up. Straight after the break, Oldham's lead was increased to 2 when Reece Wabara's looping header beat Liverpool 'keeper Brad Jones. Joe Allen's deflected shot got Liverpool back in the game, but Oldham were able to hold out to cause a huge upset, and will face Everton in the 5th round.

Hamburg 3-2 Werder Bremen
Hamburg moved up to 9th in the Bundesliga, with a 3-2 win over 9 man Werder Bremen. Assani Lukimya- Mulongoti gave Werder a 9 minute lead, but the lead lasted just 12 minutes as Son Heung-Min equalised for the home side. Dennis Aogo turned the game on its head straight after the break, before Artjoms Rudnevs made it 3-1. Sokratis Papasthatopoulos did get one back for Bremen with half an hour to go, but red cards to Clemens Fritz and Marko Arnautovic made it too difficult for the away side to steal a point. Bremen remain 12th with 22 points after that defeat.

Stuttgart 0-2 Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich stretched their lead at the top of the Bundesliga with a comfortable 2-0 win at Stuttgart. The away side were left frustrated at half time, as they went into the break 0-0, but Mario Mandzukic gave them the lead straight after the break. Bologna 3-3 Roma
Bologna and Roma played out a fantastic 3-3 draw in the early kick off this afternoon. Alessandro Florenzi gave the away side an early lead, before Alberto Gilardino equalised for Bologna. However, they weren't level for long, as Pablo Osvaldo restored Roma's lead less than 60 seconds later. Manolo Gabbiadini once again drew the home side level, before Cristian Pasquato put his side into the lead for the first time in the game with half an hour left.

Bologna were looking good for the win, but with 16 minutes remaining, Panagiotis Tachtsidis popped up with the equaliser. Roma drop to 8th in Serie A, with Bologna falling to 15th.

Atalanta 0-1 AC Milan

Atalanta dropped to 14th in the table, 5 points off of safety.

Cagliari 1-1 Palermo
Cagliari struck late to claim a point against 19th placed Palermo. The relegation strugglers took the lead half an hour into the game when Josip Ilicic put them in front. They looked good for just their 4th victory of the season, but right at the death Thiago Ribeiro equalised for the home team to steal a share of the spoils.

Catania 2-1 Fiorentina
Catania claimed an important 3 points against Fiorentina, to move within 1 point of their opponents. It was the away side to take the lead, when Giulio Migliaccio opened the scoring half way through the first half. However, straight after half time, Catania equalised through Nicola Legrottaglie, and with just 2 minutes to go, Lucas Castro put his side into the lead. There wasn't enough time for Fiorentina to get back into the game, who had lost Alberto Aquilani to a straight red card 10 minutes previous. Fiorentina drop to 6th after Milan's victory, with Catania up to 7th.

Parma 1-2 Napoli
Edinson Cavani struck late to give Napoli all 3 points at Parma. The away side took the lead in the first half, when playmaker Marek Hamsik fired home. They were leading for a large part of the game, but Parma capitalised on it only being a one goal lead in the 74th minute, when Nicola Sansone equalised. However, they were unable to keep out the superb Cavani, who scored the winner with just 5 minutes remaining. Napoli consolidate second place, with Parma dropping to 10th.

Sampdoria 6-0 Pescara
Sampdoria romped to victory over fellow relegation rivals Pescara this afternoon, thanks to 4 goals from Mauro Icardi. Eder Martins gave the home side an early lead from the penalty spot, before Icardi scored his first to go into half time 2 to the good. Pedro Obiang made it 3-0, 5 minutes after the break, before Icardi completed the victory with a 16 minute hat trick. With that victory, Sampdoria move up to 13th in Serie A, with Pescara staying 17th.

Udinese 1-0 Siena
1 goal was enough for Udinese to overcome bottom place Siena. Striker Luis Muriel scored the only goal of the game 10 minutes before half time, as Udinese move up to 9th in Serie A. Siena's bleak season continues, as they remain 20th, 6 points from safety.

Inter Milan 2-2 Torino
Inter dropped two points at home against mid table Torino in a game they could of lost. The home side got of the a fast start and were in the lead after just 6 minutes when Christian Chivu's free kick found the top corner. Torino battled on and got their equaliser after Riccardo Meggiorini capitalised on a defensive mistake to collect the ball and smash into the net. And the game got better for Meggiorini and Torino in the 52nd minute when he poked in a low cross to put the away side ahead. Inter were level 15 minutes later when Esteban Cambiasso was left unmarked at the back post to score but the home side could not get the vital winner.

FA Cup Preview: Oldham Athletic Vs Liverpool

Written by Matthew Winter

Oldham will really by hoping for the Magic of the FA Cup when they take on in form Liverpool at Boundary Park. Oldham have only picked up 1 win in their last nine games, a 3-2 win in the last round at Nottingham Forest, where Liverpool have finally found some form that saw them sweep Norwich aside 5-0 last time out.

Oldham are without club captain and midfielder Dean Furman who is on national team duty with South Africa at the Cup of Nations. This paves the way for lifelong 'Pool fan James Wesolowski to captain the home side. Brad Jones will again deputise for Pepe Reina who is ruled out with injury. Full backs Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson are both doubts with hamstring problems.

Kick off: 16:00

Soccer Xtra Prediction: Oldham 1-2 Liverpool

FA Cup Preview: Leeds United Vs Tottenham

Written by Matthew Winter

Leeds face an uphill battle against an in form Tottenham side which was made more difficult when striker Luciano Becchio handed in a transfer request. The Argentina front man is still likely to play, but how much will his mind be on the game it is hard to tell.

Spurs will be buoyed by the performance against Manchester United last week where they could and maybe should of taken all 3 points. William Gallas may return to the visitors defence after returning to training, but Sandro and Kaboul are ruled out through injury and Emmanuel Adebayor at the African Cup of Nations.

FA Cup Preview: Brentford Vs Chelsea

Written by Matthew Winter

Chelsea will be looking to write the wrongs on Wednesday night's League Cup Semi Final exit when they travel to local rivals Brentford. The blues have a quite incredible away record, not being beaten outside of the Bridge since November when they lost to Juventus in Turin. Chelsea will be without Eden Hazard who starts the first of his 3 game ban for the straight red he received at Swansea and David Luiz is still ruled out with an ankle injury.

Brentford have been in fantastic for this season currently sitting 4th in League One. If the Bees are to threaten there local neighbours then it will probably come from top scorer Clayton Donaldson who will prove a handful for the Chelsea defence.

La Liga Round Up 26/1/13

Written by Matthew Winter

Celta de Vigo 1-1 Real Sociedad
Celta will see today's result as dropped points as they look to move away from the relegation zone. The home side went ahead when Krohn-Dehli played a smart one two before sliding the ball in the corner. But it didn't get much better for the home side who lost Fernandez to two yellow cards just after the interval. It took only 10 minutes for Sociedad to make the man advantage count. Elustondo rose free from a corner to head home and earn the away side a point.

Levante 2-1 Valladolid
Levante moved between 2 points of a Champions League place after coming from behind to beat Valladolid. The away side took the lead after 8 minutes after Baraja spectacularly volleyed home after a poor clearence from a corner. The home side got an important leveller just before half time when Barkero curled in a wonderful free kick. It took until the 90th minute for Levante to grab their winner in fortuitous circumstances when Rukavina poked into his own goal.

Real Zaragoza Vs Espanyol
Only a point can separate the teams in the table but nothing could on the pitch today. In a particular scrappy game both teams were reduced to ten men in the final 10 minutes with Lopez and Sapunaru picking up 2 yellow cards a piece.

Deportivo 2-3 Valencia
Valencia grabbed a vital win that kept them in touch with Malaga in 6th place and Deportivo rooted to the bottom of the table. Jonas put the away side in the lead as early as the first minute but Deportivo turned the scoring round in the first half with 2 goals from Riki. But a red card early in the second half for Deportivo's Silvio put Valencia in the ascendancy. Nelson Valdez equalised and Alberto Costa won it for the away side in final minute before another red card for the home side, this time Assuncao.

Serie A Round Up 26/1/13

Juventus 1-1 Genoa
Juventus missed out on the chance to pull 8 points clear at the top of Serie A after they were held to a 1-1 draw against Genoa. Although having the lions share of the ball throughout the first half there was no break through. But in the 54th minute Fabio Quagliarella put the home side ahead after stabbing home a cross. Things weren't all going the home sides way and the visitors levelled with 20 minutes remaining. Former Juventus player Borriello stooped to head home a far post cross from Kucka.

Lazio 0-1 Chievo
Chievo won for only the third time this season on their travels and this by far their most impressive. Facing 3rd place Lazio the home side dominated a lot of the possession and could of taken the lead on many different occasions. But it was the away team who took their chance when it came. After the ball came back off the crossbar Paloschi was there to slam the ball into the Lazio net and Chievo hung on for a famous victory.

Hannover 2-1 Wolfsburg
Hannover moved into the top half of the League after overcoming Wolfsburg despite having only 10 men for over 45 minutes of the game. It was a fast start from the home side who found themselves ahead after just 3 minutes when Abdellaoue superbly curled in from a tight angle. Pocognoli was shown his marching orders just after the half hour mark with a high tackle that warranted the punishment. But 3 minutes later Diouf doubled the home sides lead with a near post header. Alexander Madlung got Wolfsburg back in the game early in the second half but the away side could not break down the 10 men for a second time.

Frankfurt 2-1 Hoffenheim
Frankfurt kept up pressure on 3rd placed Leverkusen with a 2-1 win over second bottom club Hoffenheim. The home side took the lead just after the half hour mark when Martin Lanig opened the scoring. Hoffenheim weere level in the 65th minute with a fantastic flick, but it was all in vain as 3 minutes later the home side retook the lead through Aigner and that's how it stayed.

Greuther Furth 0-3 Mainz
After a goalless first half bottom club Furth were taken apart by 5th Mainz who continue to push for a European place. The lead was doubled inside quarter of an hour when Hermann struck. Although Schahin struck from the spot for Dusseldorf they were unable to mount any big chances to level.

Augsburg 0-0 Schalke
Schalke will be happy to come out of the game with a point away at lowly Augsburg. The home side dominated long spells of the game and will be disappointed that they were not able to capitalise on their dominance. Striker Molders had the best chance but saw his effort come back off the post.

Freiburg 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen
Leverkusen missed out on the chance to move to within 6 points of League leaders Bayern Munich when they could only manage a goalless draw at mid table Freiburg. The home side drop a place to 8th after Monchengladbach's home win.

Norwich City 0-1 Luton Town
Conference side Luton became the first Non League outfit to knock out their top flight opposition in over 20 years after a stunning 1-0 win at Carrow Road. The Non Leaguers defended admirably and hit the sucker punch when Scott Rendall nicked in at the near post to put Luton in the 5th Round.

Brighton & Hove Albion 2-3 Arsenal
Brighton twice came from behind but couldn't do it a third time as a late Theo Walcott strike won it for the Gunners. But substitute Walcott fired home from the edge of the area to win the game late on.

Bolton Wanderers 1-2 Everton

Chris Dagnall goal won the battle of Championship sides as 23rd placed Barnsley completed a fantastic 1 nil victory over 3rd placed Hull at the KC Stadium.

Macclesfield Town 0-1 Wigan Athletic

Middlesbrough 2-1 Aldershot
Middlesbrough edged out lower league opposition Aldershot in a game that came into life in the last 10 minutes. Lukas Jutkiewicz thought he has won the game when he opened the scoring with 7 minutes of normal time remaining before FA Cup top scorer Danny Hylton levelled in the 89th minute for the League Two side. But Jutkiewicz struck again in the 5th minute of stoppage time to break Aldershot hearts.

QPR 2-4 MK Dons
QPR Manager Harry Redknapp was punished for fielding a weakened team as they were thumped by League One MK Dons. The Dons raced into a 4 goal lead through an Armand Traore OG, Lowe, Harley and Potter. Bothroyd and Fabio scored late on but they were nothing but consolation goals.

Reading 4-0 Sheffield United
Reading comfortable brushed aside lower league opposition in Sheffield United with relative ease. Noel Hunt open the scoring early on and further goals from Leigertwood, Hunt's second and McCleary kept Reading on the winning run.

Manchester United 4-1 Fulham
United swept Fulham aside in an easy fashion and were ahead as earlier as the second minute. Ryan Giggs dispatched a penalty after Aaron Hughes handled and Rooney added a second early on in the second half before Hernandez quickfire double made it four. Aaron Hughes rose highest at a corner to head home Fulham's consolation

FA Cup Preview: Manchester United Vs Fulham

Written by Matthew Winter

After scrapping past West Ham in the 3rd Round, United will be looking for a more comfortable afternoon when they host, notoriously bad travelers Fulham. Sir Alex will surely shuffle his pack with games coming thick and fast and with Ashley Young and Jonny Evans ruled out there could be places for Nani, Anderson and Kagawa in the starting team.

Fulham will be aiming to stop United complete 5 wins out of 5 against them but will be without former United youth Kieran Richardson who misses out after picking up a calf injury last week. Kerim Frei and Mahamadou Diarra remain long term absentees. But Dimitar Berbatov looks set to lead the line against the club who sold him in the summer.

FA Cup Preview: Stoke City Vs Manchester City

Written by Matthew Winter

Stoke's reward for beating Palace a fortnight ago in a 3rd Round replay is to host the English Championship in which Manager Tony Pulis has admitted 'I hope they have an off day'.  The Manchester club famously beat Stoke in the 2011 final with Yaya Toure scoring the only goal to win City's first silverware under the new regime. City's last defeat in an FA Cup tie away from the Etihad Stadium came against Stoke in the Fifth round of the competition and the hosts will be dearly hoping for a repeat.

Stoke's 'Cup keeper' Tom Sorensen will start in place of Asmir Begovic, but right back Andy Wilkinson is likely to miss out with a back injury. New long throw specialist Ryan Shotton is available after picking up a hamstring problem, but may not be risked with big league games coming up.

Samir Nasri has been rated as 50:50 for the visitors as he tries to recover from a virus and right backs Micah Richards and Maicon are both ruled out with knee injuries. One piece of good news is that Pablo Zabaleta has recoverd from his foot injury and will play.

Millwall 2-1 Aston Villa
Aston Villa became the 4th Round's first major casualties as they crashed out 2-1 at The New Den. After Tuesday's disappointing Capital One Cup exit Paul Lambert was hoping for success in a different competition. After a cagey opening Villa took the lead when Darren Bent scuffed shot found the back of the net after 22 minutes. It didn't take Millwall long to level and it was familiar defensive frailties for the Midlands club. Danny Shittu rose highest in the box to head home a corner.

The second half never really got going for either side but Millwall struck the final blow with only a minute remaining on the clock when John Marquis headed past Shay Given to book the South Londoners place in the 5th Round draw.

Borussia Dortmund overtook Bayer Leverkusen in second place in the Bundesliga this evening with a comfortable win over FC Nurnberg. Jakub "Kuba" Blaszczykowski opened the scoring for the home side in the 18th minute with a penalty, after Lukas Piszczek was taken down in the box. However, on second glimpse, it appeared that the defender had gone down too easily.

"Kuba" made it 2-0 in the 20th minute, and there was no disputing this goal, as Mario Gotze superbly pulled the ball back across the box for the Pole to sweep home his second. Dortmund continued to press forward, and even though the win never looked in doubt, victory was completed when Robert Lewandowski made it 3-0 2 minutes before time.

Dortmund now sit 9 points behind leaders Bayern Munich, who of course have a game in hand this weekend, with Nurnberg remaining 15th on 21 points.

FA Cup Preview: Millwall Vs Aston Villa

Written by Matthew Winter

Aston Villa will travel down to South London with the disappointment of Tuesday night's Capital One Cup Semi Final exit still fresh in their minds. Despite the 2-1 victory it was not enough for Villa to book a place in the final so now turn to the FA Cup as a welcome distraction from the battle with relegation.

Milwall on the other hand started the season well, but lost last time out in the League at home to Burnley which saw them slip to 9th place. The Championship side are severely weakened in attacking options with on loan striker Nathan Tyson being ruled out with injury and yesterday's sale of front man Darius Henderson to Nottingham Forest. Liam Feeney is fit again but Scott Malone is still sidelined along with Martyn Woolford (Cup tied) and Shane Lowry (Suspended).

Villa have Ashley Westwood and Jordan Bowery both fit and in contention to play but defenders Nathan Baker and Richard Dunne are still unavailable through injury.
